Highlights: Alirio deMeireles is a fourth-year MD-MBA student at the University of Michigan Medical School and the Ross School of Business. In medical school, in conjunction with researchers at the Institute for Health Policy and Innovation, Alirio has led multiple projects aimed at maximizing value in surgery. Further, he is currently serving as the head of business development for a novel medical device.
Education: Alirio attended Yale University where he earned a B.A. in Evolutionary Biology in 2015. He is currently pursuing his MD-MBA at the University of Michigan with an anticipated graduate year of 2020.
Select Experiences:
  • Led multiple studies at IHPI focused on improving Patient Reported Outcomes after bariatric surgery

  • Conducted an analysis of prosthetic joint implants to show that novel, more expensive devices were not producing increased clinical benefit – leading to a change in clinical practice, reduction in episode cost, and higher value surgical care

  • His work completed in orthopaedic and bariatric surgery has been published in top academic journals and he has also presented his findings via oral presentations at major national conferences.

  • Conducted the market analysis and led the value proposition design for a novel neurosurgical medical device

  • Directed 30+ in-person customer discovery interviews with neurologists, neurosurgeons, hospital supply chain operators, etc. to assess market demand

  • Pitched device to several leaders within the biotechnology innovation space at a pitch competition, winning first prize

  • Serves as a Member of the Michigan State Medical Society Committee on Healthcare Quality, Efficiency, and Economics
